The Otherside

Word Count: 32,269....

It still has a long ways to go, Lilith:Released isn't doing much better. But I figure I can share a bit of what I've been working on. The Otherside is sketchy. I go back and forth between what will and won't be happening. So even as I share this there is always a chance it will be cut from the final product.

I watched the orange tendril of fire stretch higher and crack. It was alive, curling around its prey in a gentle caress before it struck with an infinite snap. The bonfire was mesmerizing, far more interesting than the drinking going on around me.

I looked up at the Othersiders sitting in a circle of fallen logs. Their faces were angled away from the eye stinging smoke and on each other. No one noticed my discomfort. The bottles of alcohol kept being drank, and the girls kept getting up to retrieve more.

They sat at one man’s feet, their chins turned up in wait for his next command. I was still waiting for the buckets of soapy water to break out and the girls to commence scrubbing his feet with their hair. They hadn’t yet…surprisingly.

I despised their devotion.

I despised the naked adoration that sat unabashedly on their skin. Real women didn’t act like that. Human women didn’t at least. But the females kneeling across from me weren’t really human. Only a fraction of their bodies pumped with regular unmagical blood, but even if they didn’t shift they were not of this world. They were Cwn Annwn, or something else Othersider I’d never even heard of.

I should probably clarify that not all of the females attending the bonfire were sitting at his feet. A few females like Pillar, and Kendall sat alongside the other men staring with just as much disgust as I did at the transfixed females. A few that I didn’t know stood on the outskirts with the same pained expression I could feel on my skin.

I hissed when the all too familiar silver eyed man held out his empty bottle and a submissive female sprung forward to retrieve it. My lip curled as she hurried off to get him one more. If Duncan expected me to sit at his feet and fetch his beer he had another thing coming. I was no one’s adoring female. I never would be. I’d be more likely to stab him in the forehead than sit at his feet.

Sutter’s laughter broke my trance and I looked over at his easy grin.

“If you could see your face.” His yellow eyes were hazy from so much beer.

I rolled my own.

“I told you it’d be like this. This ridiculousness---,” he slurred and smiled. He tried to say it again and it came out even worst. A short chuckle erupted in my chest.

“This shit is just the Cwn Annwn females…wait that’s not a bad idea really. Feel like getting on your knees Lorelei?”

I ignored his innuendo and focused on his use of my full name. I hated when he called me Lorelei and he knew it.

“Fuck you.”

Sutter howled with another burst of laughter. “Even better.”

I socked him hard in the shoulder.

“What did you expect?” Sutter said pointing out at the crowd. “He’s a king to them now.”

He swallowed more beer and pouted the moment he realized his bottle was empty. A female Cwn Annwn jumped forward to grab it from his hand but he slapped her away.

“I can get my own God damned beer.” Sutter jumped to his feet, and swayed a little before righting himself.

I failed to bite back a smile and tried not to stare at his ass, which was something I’d been failing to do lately. No one could really blame me either. He was hot and actually capable of getting his own beer, not relying on his fan-girls to do it for him.

I glared at Duncan who continued to drink and laugh, completely unaware of my murderous gaze. He didn’t know that I was dying inside. He didn’t know that I was barely holding it together. Part of me wanted to scream obscenities at him for not noticing. While the other part was glad I didn't have to tell him about Lyle.

The Otherside: A teaser!

I've been working on The Otherside. Not all that much, or that often, but I have been working on it. I thought the readers might enjoy a little treat.

This is a nice long distance into the book, something I don't usually share because of spoilers. But with a name like The Otherside, I'm pretty sure you know where this book is going, or rather where Lorelei is going.......

Meet Arawn, King of Annwn.

"I couldn’t deny Arawn’s allure. He was beautiful, but so were plenty of other monsters. My father was a beautiful man, that beauty did not betray him, and leave the room when he reached for his belt. His beauty remained no matter how ugly his actions. Beauty did not ultimately equate to good. Evil could lurk inside it, because beauty was the ultimate camouflage.

Arawn was not as dark skinned as Gideon, but he was still golden. A shiny hue glowed beneath his skin. The camouflage that masked his true nature. I knew without a doubt that he was evil. What else would willingly steal the souls of the dead? I hated that I was a part of it. I hated that his shackles for the dead had born my kind.
Nature SPOILER had said, needed a balance for everything. I was the compliment to his hounds. I stared at his brown hair, and silvery blue eyes. His body was hard with muscles. I could see them bunching beneath the fine cut of his Victorian clothing. His face had fine strong features and noble bone structure. He looked like a King...but evil I reminded myself, had many faces."

Scent Hound: Is Officially Finished!!!

Something almost magical happens every time I finish a book. Scent Hound is only the third, but I can already see a pattern arising. The first few days before the last words are typed I have insomnia...worse than normal. My subconscious is aware of what's about to happen and makes it impossible for me to sleep. The day of, I'm on a natural high so great that nothing bothers me, not the new broken piece of furniture that was just shipped to me, not the firework my son set off inside his room. No the high from finishing a book is so great nothing can touch me.

I can't wait for my readers, family, and friends to read my new story. It was a new journey in discovering myself as well as my ability. It gets easier and easier. I enjoyed this book in a way I didn't with the others, I let my muse guide me, and tried not to get in her way. Funny how much easier things are when you just give in and let them go the way they want to. Here's to finishing!!! Cheers!! Now I'm going to go celebrate with a cocktail.

Inspiration

Recently I've been working on Scent Hound, a novel spinoff of The Wild Hunt. The story centers around a Cwn Annwn female that is blessed with the gift of being able to smell everything and I mean EVERYTHING. She can smell your lies and your secrets, the things you want no one in the world to know.

I took a long break from writing and I come back refreshed, and inspired. I look to lots of different outlets for inspiration. I watch the people around me interact, I read voraciously, watch movies, take trips and research constantly. What has inspired me for over a year now is the music from one artist in particular...Ben Howard. If you haven't been blessed enough to know his music then listen to the video below. It's more upbeat than a lot of his other songs.

I was lucky enough to see him in concert this last April. We made the drive up to SF for one night just to see his show. To say it was amazing is a vast understatement. His music makes me ache in my bones, it makes me feel so much so deeply that it helps the words come to my fingers and pour onto the page. I listen to him when I drive, when I write, I sing his songs to my children to help them sleep. I thank God and the muse for music like Ben Howards. It inspires, it reaches inside of you and tugs free a feeling you didn't even know you had. Its the words of my heart put to chords.

His live music is like watching him bleed before you. He sings his heart out, puts it into every note and strum of the guitar. I want to write like he sings. I want to bleed before my computer and write in a way that reaches out to other people so that their hearts feel my words, and they fall inside my story.

There aren't many things past books that makes me a crazy fan girl. I collect authors instead of rock stars. I aspire to write like those I read. What moves me changes me for the better most of the time. I hope this music that pulls so much from me will help do the same. The last song I'm putting up here I couldn't listen to for a long time. I always skipped over it because something about it disturbed me on a very personal level. My grandma passed away in October. Her loss is felt deeply in my family, in my own heart. The song, I will be Blessed, always makes me think of her. Its haunting and tragically beautiful and I think, I'm so glad I was there the day she died. Not because it was a good thing, but because I was there to hold her hand and honor her life with my love and support.

The Otherside Book Trailer

After finishing up Lilith I decided to take a small break from writing. It only lasted a few days (no surprise there), but now that Lilith is done I'm gearing up to really jump into The Otherside. I have two other projects going simultaneously Scent Hound, and a contemporary YA I started much for the same reason I started Lilith. The strange need to try something else to get the creative juice flowing. I'm now about 12,000 words into all three. I'm going to try to write them in spurts first one then the other, but like anything I do I'll probably trade off so it doesn't get stagnant.

At times other forms of creativity inspire me, music helps immensely. My current favorite at the moment is Ben Howard. I stumbled across him over a year ago and haven't been able to find anyone else who's words and chords can move me the way his do. Genius to put it simply.

So it was only a matter of time before I used his music for a book trailer.

The song is called "Black Flies". The meaning behind the song is simple, its about losing friends. The loss of friendship and the distance that can grow between people is a large theme in The Otherside. The haunting lyrics helped me write in a way that I hope portrays that loss. It's important to the story that Lo's struggle with two worlds is thrust ahead of everything, love, ghosts, friends and family. She needs to find the balance for herself, and that sometimes means other things get overlooked. The worse part is she knows its happening, but can do nothing to stop it.

So watch the video and judge for yourself. I love the song. It inspires me.

First Review

Well that inevitable day has arrived. I have gotten my first real review of The Wild Hunt. I have had plenty of feedback from family and friends, even friends of friends. But this is my first review from a complete stranger.

I am wowed and humbled by this man's words. Not only did he read it and take time out of his busy life to do, but he enjoyed it and wrote a review. There is no greater compliment than that. He even provided feedback about what he didn't like, which I loved even more than the good things he had to say. Family and friends are always afraid of hurting your feelings, this is a good and bad at the same time. When you are looking for true opinions family and friends aren't always the most reliable.

Although I know for a fact my mom would tell me if it was horrible. She doesn't want me to make an ass of myself anymore than I do. Thank you mom!!

If you would like to read the review I have attached the link below. Thank you reader for your kind words and much needed feedback!

Lilith

Not everyone believes in love at first sight.

I know I didn't, but when a new boy moved to my little town, everything, including me changed. It wasn't his deep blue eyes, or his perfect smile that called to me, but a connection that was older than time. Our lives were connected, and the past has a way of circling.

After a date gone horribly wrong, then the blood and the fever. I started to hear voices no one else could hear. People died, some were tortured, my pain was her pleasure...and Lilith was at the center of it all.

Love isn't just a fairy tale, its survival. Clawing my way from death and standing up for that love no matter the price. Because in the end love is all that really matters anyway...even when its the at first sight kind.

A drink with a friend.....

A drink with a friend.

Interview of Duncan Benandanti

I was slightly more nervous to meet Duncan in person than Lorelei. My interview with her went pretty much the way I always imagined. I knew what she was capable of, snarky attitude and all. But while I knew Lorelei in a very deep and personal way, Duncan was something else entirely. I never spent time in his head. I didn’t know his inner thoughts and demons.

Eventually I hoped to change that. The need to write something about Duncan’s time away from concord was more out of my interest in Finley than anything. I wanted to know the boy behind the monster. Although death never means a character is gone forever. At least not when it’s about The Otherside.

Back to Duncan. I always saw him as a little tortured, but strong. So strong, he made it impossible not to like him. He surprised me with how much crap he’d put up with from Lo. I mean not to talk crap about him but he did at times resemble a door-mat.

It’s cold out. Luckily, my drive up the mountain was easy. It’s been clear for a couple of days so no chains were necessary. This time of year is not one of my favorites. I prefer the heat of the summer to the teeth chattering cold. I walk into Lyle’s and smile, my names on the wall. I wrote it a few years back when we spent almost the entire summer up here. My dad has a house just outside Oakhurst (Pinecrest).

I take a seat at the bar it’s strangely deserted. The summer tourists are gone, they don’t like the cold either. Lyle walks out of the kitchen and smiles when he sees me.

“Ashley.” He says in greeting and pulls a cup from beneath the bar.

“What would you like?” He asks.

I think it over and decide against vodka, that’s Lo’s drink not mine.

“Do you have any apple beer?” I ask. He smiles and grabs a brown bottle from a fridge. He opens it and slides it my way. The door behind me opens and a ray of sunshine falls on the wall in front of me. Lyle’s smile falls and he reaches over for another brown bottle. He sets it on the bar for my guest and retreats back into the confines of the kitchen.

“Hi there.” A deep voice calls from my shoulder.

I turn and take in Duncan’s features. His jaw is covered in dark scratchy hair. His grey eyes are grinning, even though his mouth isn’t. He's wearing dark jean's, boots, and a grey long sleave flannel shirt.

“Hello.” My voice squeaks.

The grin finally touches his lips as they turn up in an amused smile. My heart stutters for a moment. Duncan reaches out a hand in greeting and I take it. I don’t feel the zap that Lorelei does and I’m saddened by it. I’d love to be a part of their world, even if it can be dangerous.

“How was your drive?” Duncan asks.

I shrug and reach into my purse for a notebook and pen.

“It was okay.”

My fingers shake as I turn to the right page.

“So.” I say steadying my voice. “What’s your favorite color?”

Duncan laughs. “That’s what readers want to know?”

I shrug.

A devious glint fills his eyes and he says. “Clear.”

My jaw drops. “That isn’t a color, it’s the lack of color.”

Duncan shakes his head. “No white is the lack of color, clear is clear.”

I jot it down in my notebook.

“Favorite beer?”

“St Pauly girl.”

“Boxers or briefs.”

This time he winks. “How bout neither.”

I flush. Is he actually flirting with me.

“First kiss?” It’s not on my list so I cover the page with my hand. He gives me a crooked smile like he knows.

“Kendall Grant.”

No wonder…

“Best childhood friend?”

Duncan’s smile falls and he looks away. “Fin…”

Shit now I feel bad. I glance down at my list and realize half of them might make him remember.

“Sorry.” I whisper.

Duncan waves it aside like it doesn’t matter. “What’s next?”

“Dream motorcycle?”

“56 panhead Harley. Black, lots of chrome, all original parts.”

“What would you like me to write about in The Otherside that I didn’t in The Wild Hunt?” I ask.

Duncan takes a swig of his beer and rubs at his stubble covered chin.

“I guess I want people to know that Lo’s not nearly as mean as she seems.”

I laugh, isn’t that what Lo was telling me at my last interview? This is becoming a theme.

“Okay.” I say after my laughter subsides. “Can you explain why you feel that way.”

Duncan meets my gaze and the bar around us disappears. He’s serious now I can tell, his eyes have taken on a harsh edge.

“See that’s what I’m getting at you should know her better than anyone and you don’t even see it. She pretends to be tough and pushes everyone away because deep down she’s just as gooey in the center as everyone else. She just works harder not to show it.”

I’m dumbfounded. I know she’s mostly talk, I really do, but hearing it from him makes it that more real. Maybe in this next book she’ll soften up a bit........or not.

“What would you like the readers to know about you, about your kind?” I ask.

“We aren’t violent by nature. That thing with Brody made it seem that way when it’s not. Most of the time things like that don’t happen.”

“What about you, what do you want readers to know about you.”

Duncan shrugs. “Just because you love someone doesn’t mean you’re a doormat.”

And that ladies and gentleman is the real answer. Relationships are hard no matter how much you love someone.

Your Welcome!

Character Interview: Lorelei Preston

Lorelei was late to our interview even though I checked, and rechecked the specific time a dozen times. After countless text messages,
directions and missed meetings. The interview finally took place. It’s a funny thing to actually meet your character face to face (so to speak). For a long time I lived inside Lorelei’s head while I wrote down her story. She arrived on her bike, wearing her signature denim shorts, knee high boots and a tank top. She didn’t smile when I extended my hand.

Me: “Hi Miss Preston, I’m so happy to finally meet you.”
Her: “Right can we move this bitch along; I have real shit to do today.”
Me: “Yes, of course…so Miss Preston-“
Her: “Lo, call me Lo, I’m not eighty.”
Me: “Okay sorry, Lo...”

A long pause stretches between us. She’s tapping her foot anxiously and I can’t help but wonder why I made her so utterly bitchy. Even to me her creator she’s snarky, it kind of sucks.

Me: “Right so, what can you tell me about yourself?”
Her: After a snort and snide smile she says….”I’m impatient, about as cuddly as a porcupine, and I don’t do relationships.”
Me: “Aren’t you currently in a relationship?”
Her: Smile disappears. “Depends on who you ask, I say we have an understanding, he thinks like an ape-man and therefore thinks he owns me.”
Me: “What would you like the readers to know?”
Her: “I’m not nearly as bitchy as you make me look.”
Me: “Right.”
Her: “I’m not, I just don’t like bullshit.”
Me: “Uh huh.”
Her: “People are idiots, they lie, they cheat, they all play this polite bullshit game and no one says what they really think or feel. I think they should, in fact I’m an advocate of STBS.”
Me: “STBS?”
Her: “Stop. The. Bull. Shit.”
Me: “And that makes you less bitchy somehow?”
Her: She narrows her eyes and sits forward. “You are absolutely right.” She sits back flopping in the chair and sighs. “I really am an asshole.”
Me: I nod along with her realization.
Her: “I guess I’m just as oblivious as everyone else.” She looks a little sick to her stomach.
Me: “No one’s perfect.”
Her: Snort. “Nope, I hear your cousin found 18 mistakes in the book.”
Me: “Right.” Now I feel sick.

Lorelei gets up from her chair, a smile firmly pulling at her lips.

Her: “Well I gotta get, I’m sure we’ll uh…be hearing from each other.” She turns on her heel and exits.

I have no words to say before she’s gone. The interview’s over before it ever even started.

My apologies....

So I suck, big surprise there I'm sure. A bunch of people signed up for The Wild Hunt giveaway a little over a month ago and I still have not got the books in the mail.

To the three people that won. I am truly sorry for being such a scatterbrained moron. Those books will be in the mail this week. If I had more money I'd put something awesome and expensive in the envelope with the book, like gold, or diamonds.

I hate being a flake, but I am one. I think flake should be in the dictionary next to writer. It should be a permanent explanation for forgetfulness and being tardy. "Hello secretary at my sons school, I'm a writer, therefore no further description is necessary to explain his constant tardiness, lack of jacket, lunch, backpack etc.

Short explanation............I suck.

The end.

Extended Character Profile: Duncan

When I write not only do I pull experiences and places from my own life as inspiration, but I also use music, pictures, movies, etc. as well.

The picture above is what I envision when I describe the house that Duncan lives in.

The home is Victorian, old, and beautiful. It was passed down through generations, just like his own powerful ability. It belonged to his father. I imagine it would have more trees and out buildings on the property. A place for Duncan to work on bikes and for Travis to paint.

In Concord itself is Custom E Bikes, the business his father started. Everyday Duncan is reminded of his missing father, one of the reasons he left Concord five years ago. For a while he travelled alone, but once his brother Finley started getting into trouble (more so than normal) his mother sent him to Duncan to try and straighten him out. It didn't work.

Duncan never did find his father, but rogue Cwn Annwn's don't do well outside the pack structure. They tend to get into trouble by nature and without an alpha to keep a hound in check they almost always turn to crime. It's too easy for them not to use their abilities to steal, cheat, or harm humans.

I like to think that Duncan is a man's man. The kind of man that is rare in these days full of skinny jeans, eye liner, and the metro-man. It's all about preference really. Some girls like the pretty boy metro thing, I don't. I like men that can work with their hands and get dirty. The ones that have muscles not from a gym but from actual hard labor. The kind of men that look good shirtless and sweaty. Scruffy men, manly men, the men that throw you down in hay lofts or in fields and have their dirty hot way with you.........anyone else feeling a little warm all of the sudden?

Back to Duncan, even though he's a mans man, and tough and all that extra testosterone crap, he's still flawed, and real. He can get testy and pushy. He steps on Lo's toes and doesn't listen half as often as he should. My hope is that he comes across as real, and layered.

I'm baaaaccckkk........

Yes, I am sorta quoting Poltergist. It is October after all, the bestest, scariest, most funnest month of the year, (ignore grammatical errors, its been a while).

So in honor of my favorite time of year, and my book launch, I decided to move, you know physically, with boxes and trailers and painting, because I didn't have enough going on. Seriously.....what in the hell was I thinking?

Not only did everything go wrong that could go wrong (almost three weeks without TV, Internet or phone, yes I almost died) I literally had, past tense, seven truck loads and one large trailer of junk. Junk. I only lived in the house for four years. Why did I have so much crap you might ask? I honestly don't know, it just happens. Even with the eight loads, I still have boxes upon boxes of Halloween decorations in my attic, and more out on the front porch being displayed. If I get a chance I'll post pictures.

So back to the book......well the launch is still on, it just may not be as polished as it should be, but that's life. A friend offered to edit it, and I think I'll take her up on it. Hopefully the daunting deadline doesn't scare her away. I know I am, but I also know that I've done what I can for my story. I've babied it long enough its time to release it out into the world. Be free Wild Hunt, soar through the sky and all that other hopeful, positive, nauseating stuff, I wish I had time to fluff it up, but really, the book speaks for itself. Some will love it, some will hate it, and all I really want is the know, know what readers see when they read it, the voices they hear, the images their imagination conjure up. Did I do my vision any justice........I think I did, but you just never know.

Visual Inspiration...........of the EYE CANDY sort!

Duncan oh Duncan where.......... in the hell are you?

Yes, I realize that is NOT Shakespeare. Half way through I couldn't remember the line, where art thou, wherearthout, is it all the same word or three separate, is it even the right three words? I went in confident lost my bearings and said screw it. It happens, I get potty mouth, its like the flu, only worst because it's constant. I'm rambling. I posted these two pics on my author blog, and thought I'd share them here on the book blog.

Why do I have two blogs you might ask?

Because I obviously have too much damn time on my hands. I'm feeling a bit facetious, hence the uncouth words, and soft profanity. Soft you know like hell and damn, not the really dirty wordies. Heh I crack myself up. So anyways.......the point.....yes I remember!!

I wish I could tell you who this model is, but I have no clue. All I know is that I found the dude on www.123rf.com, it's my place for stock photos. Really it's one of the cheapest places out there. It takes a little more digging to find what you are looking for, but you'll spend less when you do. So here he is, the closest thing I could find to what's in my head.

His hair is a bit short in the pics above but he looks so dark and dirty who cares. I think he looks a little like Matt Bomer (Magic Mike, White Collar). Albeit he's a scruffier not nearly as pretty Matt Bomer. You can't tell from these pics but the actual model has a crooked nose which I love because Duncan does. Luckily there are tons of pictures of him so that I can treat the female readers pretty often to some Duncan eye candy.

Music Inspiration

Not long ago I discovered Spotify, and have since been a convert/addict. Before Spotify I used Itunes, Pandora, Playlists, Amazon cloud, any number of separate sites to listen to music in the hopes that I would be inspired.

I think music plays a huge part in creating anything. I listen to music while I cook, when I have a home improvement project, and the rare times when I clean (I HATE cleaning). Music can set a mood, or a tone to the work you are doing. You blare some fun catchy beat and shake your butt, it brings you up, and lightens your mood. You listen to a somber song that makes you remember a lost love, or mistake, or someone that is no longer living, and it knocks you down, makes you able to use those feelings to write a great scene.

In honor of music inspiration and well my own OCD behavior I'm going to give a list of songs I listened to when I wrote The Wild Hunt. Its under a playlist on Spotify named conveniently The Wild Hunt.....so without further ado.......
